On a crisp Saturday morning, the Stemettes descended on The Crystal building in Docklands – a building dedicated to Siemen’s Future Cities Initiative, who were to host us for the entire day. We kicked off the October half-term with a 2-day ‘big data’ themed hack at Christ Church college Oxford, sponsored by BIPB. Over the weekend, 30 girls and their parents played with data (lot of numbers and stats) on topics as diverse as boybands, Build-a-Bear and nutrition to create beautiful data visualisations and informative infographics. Our sponsors, Business Intelligence specialists BIPB flew in Hannah Curtis – a consultant from their New York office to help girls get to grips with industry tool Qlikview and a big data feed from Twitter.
