This Wednesday (the 8th of March), the world will be celebrating International Women’s Day #IWD2017, asking the question will you #BeBoldForChange? Stemettes will of course, be boldly and proudly recognising all of the ‘STEMazing’ contributions made by women in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM). The month of March is also ‘Women’s History Month’ – a chance for us all to celebrate women in STEM, from the past, present and future. A report released last week found that that young girls across Europe become interested in STEM subjects around 11 years old but lose interest by 15, so it’s important […]

Celeste, 11, attends City Academy and attended one of our ‘STEM in a Day’ school trips at EY in July 2016. She wrote a piece about her experience, including a poem! We entered the shining tall building, and as we entered, we saw everything so organised and clean, looking as professional as the visit was itself. The staff looked lovely and were too. We had to create our own apps to replace school, to get a taste of what they do at EY. National Grid’s ngLabs were also there on the day and told us about wonderful things they work […]

The following post is written by 13-year-old Jamila Bihi, who attended Rise Hack with her sister Naima. Naima is an Outbox Incubator alumnus and founder of Modlyst – an online community for modest fashion. Rise Hack, hosted by Stemettes and sponsored by Rise London in partnership with Barclays, was held on 5-6 March to celebrate International Women’s Day.  When my sister first announced that I would be going to my first hackathon I was so excited that I barely got a wink of sleep for the following few nights. As the days flew past, I got more and more nervous. Finally Saturday […]

For the last 18 months the Stemettes team have been helping Everywoman UK and BP work on their Modern Muse project – to create an app of inspirational women in tech for young women to follow along with. As part of the launch of the app and the 2016 Everywoman in Technology Forum we ran a panel of Student Stemettes talking about what inspires them and why the Modern Muse app is needed. They spoke in front of an industry audience of 500 about their experiences and STEM aspirations. Post-panel #selfie with some of our fab audience of #womenintech – […]

This blog post has been written by Alexandra Radu, 21 who won a Stemettes competition in partnership with BeyondConf, the conference for junior developers in 2015. Alex is studying BA Business Management and Publishing Media at University. Excited that I am going to @BeyondConf thanks to the wonderful @Stemettes!! #DigitalAddict pic.twitter.com/7Xw7zQJHxF — Alexandra Radu (@AlexandraMMR) November 18, 2015 On 23rd November 2015, I was fortunate enough to attend BeyondConf, in London. BeyondConf is a one-day conference for people who code. More than 600 developers join each other for a day filled with interactive workshops and inspiring talks. The speakers and workshop […]

The following post is based on a speech given at Stemettes’ 3rd birthday celebrations by Yasmine Dankwah, who is currently a Student to Stemette (STS) sherpee. STS aims to inspire young women into STEM careers by connecting them with a woman in industry who actively mentors them over the course of four months. The programme is supported by Deutsche Bank.  I joined Stemettes because I was generally interested in technology – however, my school’s main focus was engineering and medicine so they did not cater for this area of STEM. For me, applying for Student to Stemette was an opportunity […]

This post has been written by Nancy Harman, a student from Brighton who recently entered and won one of our OtotheB competitions. Sign up to gain access to OtotheB here. On Tuesday 19th January I crossed over the border to American soil and visited the residence of the US Ambassador in Regent’s Park. Not quite a normal afternoon for a 16 year-old studying for her A-levels. (I’m not complaining). Even better, it was to hear Dr Ellen Stofan, Chief Scientist at NASA to speak about her current work and experiences. Ellen addressed a small group of us on NASA’s projects at the moment and it’s […]

At Stemettes, we take pride in being doers when it comes to inspiring girls into Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM). We’ve compacted life in industry into one day with our STEM in a Day school trips. Two schools to bring ten of their girls into a STEM company to meet women in STEM, eat great food and gain technical skills – all in one day. School trips have never been so amazing. This year we’ve run trips to five companies with over 300 girls in London, Aberdeen and Dublin. We have upcoming events with Softwire, Bentley Systems and Accenture. […]

This blog post has been written by Savinay, 13 who attended the event and is also an alumnus from Outbox Incubator. Our video from the event is at the bottom of this blog. The day kicked off at around eleven when I arrived at Bank of America Merrill Lynch in Central London. The building was absolutely incredible, open and modern. Since I was a volunteer for the day I spent the first few hours behind a desk checking people in with a nifty piece of technology that made the inner tech nerd within me squeal a little! You just had to […]

It’s been a big week for Outbox execs. This summer, the girls have gone from Outbox newbies to fully-fledged STEM role models. Fresh from the end of the tech, selfie and inspiration-packed six weeks that was the Outbox Incubator, the execs are embarking on the next phase of their Stemettes journey – to inspire other young women to get involved in STEM. Four execs (Katrine, AJ, Jo and Hannah) and Head Stemette, Anne-Marie, spent Saturday 19 September in Cambridge with Girlguiding Anglia at their Inspire24 event. The aim of this weekend, held at Murray Edwards College, was to expose the […]
