Stemettes are proud to announce that Anne-Marie Imafidon, our ‘Head Stemette’ has been awarded an MBE for services to Young Women and STEM Sectors as part of the 2017 New Years Honours List, aged 27. Anne-Marie is our CEO and has led the Stemettes team since she launched the award-winning organisation back in February 2013 – to inspire and build up the pipeline of young women going into STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Maths) careers, after discovering the falling numbers going into her industry. Anne-Marie said she was ‘surprised’ and ‘honoured’ to be included. “It’s a well done and thank […]

On 27th July 2015 history was made. The first ever Outbox Incubator – a pioneering incubator for young women from across Europe opened its doors to the first batch of 45 young entrepreneurs in a large house in South London. Billed as a cross between Dragons Den, The Apprentice and Big Brother, it was a first of its kind project run by award winning social enterprise Stemettes. We all felt a sense of excitement for what was about to happen. No-one knew the future, we all had expectations but what happened next was the stuff of legends. It’s been a […]

Caitlin, 15, is studying for her GCSEs and has chosen Computer Science and Triple Science as part of her options. She spent a week doing work experience with the Stemettes team in June 2016. I chose to find my placement myself, even though my school had offered alternatives. I was definitely glad of time I put in to research suitable companies. This wasn’t the typical type of work experience; there was no making tea or moments of boredom! I was always kept occupied with a number of exciting tasks such as searching for a suitable WordPress theme for one of […]

Eat. Sleep. STEM. Repeat! So… in true Stemettes fashion we have acted upon what we have learnt. How did we learn it? By listening to what the next generation of girls have been saying about what they think is missing from the world of STEM. We’ve been going for two years, and this is what the young women at our events, exhibitions and in schools have been saying they need but couldn’t find! They need STEM expertise advice and training. They want real career path advice. They want first hand experience. They want to meet other girls that are interested […]

It’s not everyday that we get an invite to Rome, but last week, Head Stemette was in Roma for a day and a half, to join the final e-Skills for Jobs event of 2014 being run by DigitalEurope and Anitec for the European Commission. It was a high-level conference for organisations and companies across the EU to share with each other, and a sizeable number of Italian youth on what they’ve been doing to promote ‘e-Skills’ – digital skills and the jobs associated with them. A day of panels, speeches and workshops for the assortment of people from EU member states. Head […]

We spent the weekend with 60 girls at Norwich High School and carried out our very first school-based hack. We always aim to have a laugh at our Hackathons and the weekend of 27th and 28th September was such a hoot! The girls had chosen to come along on their weekend to dabble in the programming world, they spanned across all year groups and they all had differing levels of tech knowledge. Norwich High School are partnered with a school in Ghana and are due to travel to visit them next year, we were tasked with running a hackathon for […]

A couple of weeks ago we received a curious email from a special somewhere and all of Stemettes HQ got really excited. Head Stemette had been invited by the Duke of York to meet the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh at a special reception for the UK Technology Industry being held at Buckingham Palace.   So, one H&M dress, Zara necklace and trip to the hairdresser later, here’s Head Stemette meeting Her Majesty the Queen! She actually worked as an engineer during World War 2, so technically she’s an Engineering Stemette. Here’s to all royal Stemettes everywhere and to the […]

We’ve spent most of this month reflecting on our impact and taking stock of what we do, how we do things and who is doing them. Since January this year, we’ve had over 400 girls at panel events, hackathons and our ‘Stemettes in Schools’ workshops – Tap & Tinker at school premises and STEM in a Day at STEM workplaces. We’ve collected data (like attitudes to STEM, desire to work in STEM and ‘what you want to be when you grow up’) from most of the girls that we’ve seen but what has been ever nicer to look at has […]

In December 2013 we attended a ‘Women in STEM’ roundtable at No 10 Downing St along with a number of STEM companies, institutions and outreach groups. We presented on what a joined up solution to the ‘women in STEM’ problem should look like. Fast forward a couple of month’s and the Stemettes have made an official pledge alongside STEM employers, businesses and institutions, all of whom are listed as signatories here on the ‘Your Life’ campaign. We pledge: • Stemettes commits to run quarterly public panel events, hackathons and exhibitions to inspire the next generation of women into STEM fields. • […]
