After the success of Eat.Sleep.STEM.Repeat. earlier this year, we’ve been working on the next chapter in our Outbox Journey: our Stemillions STEM clubs. Inspiring young women is one thing. Empowering them to ‘be the change’ is another. It’s been a hard slog to create a streamlined way to do this in a way that makes sense for lots of types of young women. We’ve also been very keen to ensure that everyone involved still gets an authentic Stemette experience; complete with food & fun. This Summer, with our partners Accenture, Bank of America Merrill Lynch and Salesforce we ran our […]

This Wednesday (the 8th of March), the world will be celebrating International Women’s Day #IWD2017, asking the question will you #BeBoldForChange? Stemettes will of course, be boldly and proudly recognising all of the ‘STEMazing’ contributions made by women in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM). The month of March is also ‘Women’s History Month’ – a chance for us all to celebrate women in STEM, from the past, present and future. A report released last week found that that young girls across Europe become interested in STEM subjects around 11 years old but lose interest by 15, so it’s important […]

This blog post has been written by Hannah Phillips, 20 who attended the event, is an Outbox Incubator alumnus. She is the founder of 4wardz and writes regularly on Hannahs Heartbeat. On Thursday 28 January, Stemettes spent a day working with 1,800 girls across the UK at simultaneous events in Manchester, London, Newcastle, Dublin and Edinburgh. I was lucky enough to help out and spent my time in Manchester, with two of the Stemettes girls. We travelled up on the Thursday afternoon and whilst I painted my nails, my co-workers reviewed their plan of action together (I was there for moral support). We […]

At Stemettes, we take pride in being doers when it comes to inspiring girls into Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM). We’ve compacted life in industry into one day with our STEM in a Day school trips. Two schools to bring ten of their girls into a STEM company to meet women in STEM, eat great food and gain technical skills – all in one day. School trips have never been so amazing. This year we’ve run trips to five companies with over 300 girls in London, Aberdeen and Dublin. We have upcoming events with Softwire, Bentley Systems and Accenture. […]

This blog post has been written by Savinay, 13 who attended the event and is also an alumnus from Outbox Incubator. Our video from the event is at the bottom of this blog. The day kicked off at around eleven when I arrived at Bank of America Merrill Lynch in Central London. The building was absolutely incredible, open and modern. Since I was a volunteer for the day I spent the first few hours behind a desk checking people in with a nifty piece of technology that made the inner tech nerd within me squeal a little! You just had to […]

It’s not everyday we co-host an event for 300 girls. In fact we never have and so it was with a mix of excitement and anticipation that we walked into the huge Sage Gateshead on the morning of Friday 16 January. Accenture, our fantastic co-host had wanted to put on the largest tech event for girls in the UK and with over 300 girls registered and confirmed, they had certainly done it. The impressive backdrop of the Sage venue was matched by an impressive array of workshop providers, demos and industry professionals – each aiming to inspire, motivate and excite […]

We’ve spent most of this month reflecting on our impact and taking stock of what we do, how we do things and who is doing them. Since January this year, we’ve had over 400 girls at panel events, hackathons and our ‘Stemettes in Schools’ workshops – Tap & Tinker at school premises and STEM in a Day at STEM workplaces. We’ve collected data (like attitudes to STEM, desire to work in STEM and ‘what you want to be when you grow up’) from most of the girls that we’ve seen but what has been ever nicer to look at has […]

It’s been 6 months since the project kicked off and boy has a lot happened! Not only have we had a serious heatwave, with UK temperatures reaching their highest for 7 years and accompanying thunderstorms but we’ve also welcomed a few new arrivals (congrats Kate!) to the team. In addition to Sonia Meggie (Inspirational Stemette), Lydia Monnington & Fahran Wallace (Hackathon Stemettes) Jacquelyn Guderley & Sophie Drouet (Blogging Stemettes), Michelle Brook (Policy Stemette) and Debbie Jelenke (Event Stemette) we welcome Marily Nika (Uni Stemette) who will be working on our links with Universities. Here’s the lowdown on everything… Up next Summer Hack time! We’ve been planning a girls hackathon since the very beginning […]
