After the success of Eat.Sleep.STEM.Repeat. earlier this year, we’ve been working on the next chapter in our Outbox Journey: our Stemillions STEM clubs. Inspiring young women is one thing. Empowering them to ‘be the change’ is another. It’s been a hard slog to create a streamlined way to do this in a way that makes sense for lots of types of young women. We’ve also been very keen to ensure that everyone involved still gets an authentic Stemette experience; complete with food & fun. This Summer, with our partners Accenture, Bank of America Merrill Lynch and Salesforce we ran our […]

The following post is written by Katie, 13, who won a prize at our Food, Coding, Weekend event, part of which was a work experience tour at Bank of America Merrill Lynch. Food, Coding, Weekend was a codeathon event run in partnership with Bank of America Merrill Lynch on 8 & 9 October 2016 with a ‘Food Waste’ theme to tie in with World Food Day. In October 2016, I attended the Stemettes Food, Coding, Weekend and had an amazing time. I made new friends and learnt Python. My team’s app, Beleaf, won the people’s choice prize – a lunch […]

Leonie is a freelance chef and food writer, with a particular passion for building confidence in girls. At our Food, Coding, Weekend on 8th October hosted by Bank of America Merrill Lynch, she was also a ‘hackathon first-timer’. Find her at www.curatedcakes.com or @gossbowl on Twitter. To a soundtrack of upbeat pop music, a stream of girls arrived at the ‘Food, Coding, Weekend’ hackathon last Saturday. The tone was set in signature Stemettes style: fun, informal and full of energy. At the centre of the buzz was, of course, founder Anne-Marie: she kicked things off with all the dynamism that makes […]

On Saturday 7 November, Meet the Stemettes panel events took place simultaneously in London and Dublin – sponsored and hosted by Bank of America Merrill Lynch. For a full run-down of the day’s events – from how we almost lost Events Stemette Charlotte under a tsunami of goodie bags, to inspiring advice from our panelists, to how many Stemettes it takes to defeat a Luas ticket machine (clue: more than one) – check out our Storify of the day’s events here. Our next panel event is happening on 5th December at Imperial College and we’ll be in Manchester doing an Animation […]

This blog post has been written by Savinay, 13 who attended the event and is also an alumnus from Outbox Incubator. Our video from the event is at the bottom of this blog. The day kicked off at around eleven when I arrived at Bank of America Merrill Lynch in Central London. The building was absolutely incredible, open and modern. Since I was a volunteer for the day I spent the first few hours behind a desk checking people in with a nifty piece of technology that made the inner tech nerd within me squeal a little! You just had to […]

As we arrived at Chester station at 11:46 on June 27th, we were overwhelmed by the number of people who had arrived with us and made a guess at the proportion of the crowd that had arrived in town for our ‘Meet the Stemettes’ panel and the proportion who were in town for the Chester races. We found a taxi, jumped in and headed for our venue – the Bank of America Merrill Lynch mbna offices in Chester Business Park. The taxi pulled up outside one of the more impressive, fancy, Buckingham Palace-like venues we’ve ever been to and we […]

We’ve been running the Student to Stemette programme for girls aged 16 and over for a while now. So far, a cohort of girls have been matched with mentors from our programme partner Deutsche Bank, and listened in on two webinars. Last week, we ran a successful ‘Career management and roles‘ webinar featuring some fantastic women from STEM Industry, Academia and Recruitment – who all gave their perspective on navigating the opportunities available in STEM. Ask for job shadowing, look for that special project – challenge yourself! Great advice from Dee Clark for @StudentStemette #sts14 — bee (@beethakore) July 23, 2014 […]

Stemettes do ‘Ada Lovelace Day’

Stemettes Ada Lovelace Day 2013 Panel Event – Doing things in a different way Over 160 attendees arrived at the Bank of America Merrill Lynch (BAML) building in the City on a rare sunny Saturday (!) in October for the Stemettes ‘Ada Lovelace Day‘ 2013 panel event; as befitting the panel was made up of 7 women and one mystery male panellist working in STEM. Lee Nicholls Managing Director in Technology division at Bank of America Merrill Lynch kicked off proceedings by talking of the critical importance of being able to source, grow and nurture talent. He said that all […]

Thank you September!

September is nearly over and as expected, we’ve been doing a lot of planning this month. There have also been a couple of highlights and lots of opportunities that have been sent to us. Check them out below – there’s a lot to get through! September roundup We kicked off September with a couple of appearances at Campus Party with the EU Commissioner for Innovation and Mozilla Foundation CEO Mark Surman. Head Stemette also joined a Women in Technology panel. Some of the girls who won tickets to Campus Party were there to witness it all – and of course […]

Following on from the success of the Stemettes Launch in February, it was time to delve a bit deeper into STEM careers for girls. At the first ever Stemettes Panel, held in the Charles Darwin House on the 7th March, we had sitting before us eight women and one man. They were there to share their thoughts, their experiences, their lessons learnt and their goals, demystifying the world of Girls in STEM. Head Stemette Anne-Marie Imafidon kicked off the evening by introducing the “wonderful women” we had sitting before us, before passing on to our host for the evening – Dr. […]
