At Stemettes, we always enjoy our hackathons and our latest Scripting Hackathon hosted by Skimlinks was no exception. Just over 50 people joined us during the 2 days at their swanky Old Street offices to enjoy the endless supply of food, drinks and JavaScript. The office common space was taken over by beanbags, tablets and girls as we begun each day with the signature Stemettes icebreakers, overview of the day and intro to Skimlinks. Then we broke up into three groups: Dance Elite, Dance Strategy and Don’t Dance. The first two groups stayed on the sofas and grabbed a tablet – […]

Stemettes’ Spring Hack was held at Bloomberg last week and it was a HUGE success. Over the course of two days, countless apps were built, quizzes made, and cats were shaken*. The atrium of the Bloomberg offices was filled with the chatter of teachers, parents and volunteers at the start of last week as the Stemettes Spring Hack took place. We kicked off the October half-term with a 2-day ‘big data’ themed hack at Christ Church college Oxford, sponsored by BIPB. Over the weekend, 30 girls and their parents played with data (lot of numbers and stats) on topics as diverse as boybands, Build-a-Bear and nutrition to create beautiful data visualisations and informative infographics. http://www.pinterest.com/stemetteh/bipb-stemettes-data-hack-example-infographics/ Our sponsors, Business Intelligence specialists BIPB flew in Hannah Curtis – a consultant from their New York office to help girls get to grips with industry tool Qlikview and a big data feed from Twitter. Saturday started with some icebreaking activities, a delivery of muffins […]

August almost done, now we’re back to school

We’ve had a ball this August. Not only has the weather genuinely amazing, but we’ve also been able to get about 80 girls up and down the country coding over the Summer. We’d like to say a huge thank you to all of the Big Stemettes who have got stuck in this Summer – on our ‘Digital Literacy’ tour with UK Youth & Microsoft and at our big ‘Stemettes Hack the Barbican’ event. Also a huge thanks to our sponsors for each of these events. We’ve moved! New website It’s now stemettes.org More and more people want to join in […]

An all-girl hackathon, organised by Stemettes, a project set up to encourage more girls to take up science, engineering, technology and maths (STEM), took over the Barbican Centre this weekend. The event saw sixty girls, some as young as eight, build their very first video games and mobile applications and present them to a jury of tech professionals. Adya, an eight-year-old girl who had never coded prior to the event, wowed the judges with her video game “My pet dog”, in which players earn points by taking care of a dog. The jury was impressed by the creativity and […]

A couple of weeks ago, the Stemettes headed to East London for a weekend of adventure at Hack the Barbican: Bazaar, a prelude to the launch of an “experimental playground” this summer that will explore the boundaries between arts, technology and entrepreneurship. This was my first official outing as a Stemette myself and I was excited to join little Stemettes for a hackathon (in trendy East London no less) and do my part to encourage more girls to become creators and not passive users of new technologies. Program or be programmed, right? I thought I was joining a regular hack, […]

If you’re like I once was, when the word ‘hackathon’ is uttered, a glazed look will pass across your face as you look into the ether and imagine Matrix style lists of green numerical digits, whizzing up and down screens, with a bunch of intimidatingly techy men flapping with great importance around a computer, typing at the speed of light, trying to crack some kind of system. Code cracked, big bad boss’ computer broken into, “hack” successful. In my mind, a “hack” was something I could never, nor would ever, be involved in. Thankfully, a Mini Fashion Hack on the […]
