In 2015, Head Stemette Anne-Marie Imafidon was part of an InspireFest panel on the ‘next generation in tech’, in Dublin, to talk about the upcoming Outbox Incubator. In 2016, Outbox Incubator cofounder Mary Carty returned to the same stage with programme Alumni. Here some of them share their experience and what they’ve been up to since the programme. Niamh Scanlon, Founder of Recharge my eCar Since Outbox Incubator, I have been awarded EU Digital Girl of the Year 2015. This award is given to girls who have shown an interest in coding and STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) and are encouraging […]

It’s been a big week for Outbox execs. This summer, the girls have gone from Outbox newbies to fully-fledged STEM role models. Fresh from the end of the tech, selfie and inspiration-packed six weeks that was the Outbox Incubator, the execs are embarking on the next phase of their Stemettes journey – to inspire other young women to get involved in STEM. Four execs (Katrine, AJ, Jo and Hannah) and Head Stemette, Anne-Marie, spent Saturday 19 September in Cambridge with Girlguiding Anglia at their Inspire24 event. The aim of this weekend, held at Murray Edwards College, was to expose the […]

It’s funny how, when something is gone, it doesn’t always mean that it’s actually physically gone. It doesn’t mean that you don’t have the memories, that when you sit in the place where it once was, you can’t still feel it in the air. I’m sitting in the Outbox Incubator house. It is empty. The beds are empty. The fridge and kitchen cupboards are empty. It is empty of laptops. It is empty of Outbox execs. And it is silent for the first time in 6 weeks. But everywhere we look, as the team sits around, we can see groups […]

Outbox Incubator: Week 5 #justthebeginning

I admit it. Our previous blogs haven’t exactly focused exclusively on the main focus of the Outbox Incubator: that the girls are becoming female entrepreneurs before our very eyes and building their own start-ups every day in the Outbox house. So many things happened in week 5, a particular highlight being Debbie – Event Stemette’s – delicious and impromptu apple crumble and custard at 10pm one night. But the crumble chat will have to wait. I’ve just sat in on a session: Emma McGuigan, Stemettes Godmother & head of Accenture UK technology, interviewing Dame Stephanie (“Steve”) Shirley who set up […]

Outbox Incubator: Week 4 #totesemosh

Just look at those girls. That was this morning when – for the first time since we started Outbox Incubator – I found myself in the house on the morning of “transfer day”. These girls, some of whom had been in the house since day 1 of week 1 (4 weeks ago now), were leaving the house at 6.30am – some of them off to airports to return to Dublin (hey, fun fact: some weeks about 40% of our intake has been Irish), some just hopping on a train to Essex. There was hugging, so much hugging, exchanging of handwritten […]

[This post originally appeared on Huffington Post here] I’ve always had a really strong leaning towards the ‘STEM’ life. From a young age I really enjoyed solving problems, doing my maths homework and spending time getting creative on the computer. The older I get the more I appreciate the environment that allowed me to flourish and ensured that any gender stereotypes never came between me and my source of joy. The main motivations for running Outbox Incubator this summer have been three-fold: a lack of female entrepreneurs, not enough women in STEM and bringing together all of the special ‘Stemettes’ […]

Outbox Incubator: Week 3 #dreamcometrue

It’s funny what you can see in a hug. There are hugs and then there are hugs. At our Demo Day at O2 Think Big Hub on Saturday 15th August, girls won various categories for pitching for investment. There were definitely ‘hugs’ not just ‘hugs’ as the girls went up to rapturous applause. Winners and runners up threw themselves into happy, smiley embraces. But more about that later. An incubator can be many things. Those ‘many things’ can be crafted, sculpted, honed and refined by the team that works to set it up. What we have learnt, however, is that […]

Outbox Incubator: Week 2 #thestruggleisreal

“I can’t decide which of my start-ups I should take to Demo Day to pitch for funding”. Oh the plight of the Outbox Incubator exec. Just 17 years old and Ciara Judge has three start-ups which are funding-worthy. The ideas existed before she joined Outbox, but the latest developments to Germinaid, Zilkr and PurchaseMate and the opportunity for funding has only come through the incubator. These are big conversations so it’s no wonder that the girls find making them a big deal. We’ve also seen a bit of a startup shuffle this week: one day into Week 2, @hollerrapp (Cats […]
