We spent the weekend with 60 girls at Norwich High School and carried out our very first school-based hack. We always aim to have a laugh at our Hackathons and the weekend of 27th and 28th September was such a hoot! The girls had chosen to come along on their weekend to dabble in the programming world, they spanned across all year groups and they all had differing levels of tech knowledge. Norwich High School are partnered with a school in Ghana and are due to travel to visit them next year, we were tasked with running a hackathon for […]

Stemettes’ Spring Hack was held at Bloomberg last week and it was a HUGE success. Over the course of two days, countless apps were built, quizzes made, and cats were shaken*. The atrium of the Bloomberg offices was filled with the chatter of teachers, parents and volunteers at the start of last week as the Stemettes Spring Hack took place. Going on the ‘Spring’ theme, Head Stemette started each day with an introduction, explaining the plan for each day and getting everyone to know each other with some networking games. So large was the army of hackers that they were […]

“Wow, free food and drinks” cried the children as they sped through the doors and into Mozilla’s London office in the heart of central London. This was how pretty much every attendee joined us on Saturday for our London Panel, sponsored by Mozilla and Technopop – anyone would think that Stemettes don’t get fed at home!   Thankfully the food didn’t stay at the centre of attention for the whole time. Soon the girls were sitting around on sofas and beanbags, ready to listen to the line up of 7 fantastic women in STEM that we had gathered for them to […]

We’re putting on a Coding Bootcamp for Stemettes who would like to increase their coding skills and maybe even enter a UK coding competition for teens, called YRS Festival of Code. What is YRS? Young Rewired State is an independent global network of kids aged 18 and under who have taught themselves to code. YRS introduces these children to like-minded peers at events around the world where they use freely available open data to make websites, apps and algorithms to solve real world challenges. And this event?  YRS Festival of Code 2014  is a week long event held at local centres […]

On a crisp Saturday morning, the Stemettes descended on The Crystal building in Docklands – a building dedicated to Siemen’s Future Cities Initiative, who were to host us for the entire day. Across the building ten STEM workshops had been set up. The girls were divided into groups and spent the day rotating around these workshops: 1. Siemens Train of the Future This exhibit houses a life-size sample ‘train of the future‘ designed by Siemens and a number of information pods around a fake ‘station’. The girls were able to play a game provided by train marketers CBS Outdoor and […]

We kicked off the October half-term with a 2-day ‘big data’ themed hack at Christ Church college Oxford, sponsored by BIPB. Over the weekend, 30 girls and their parents played with data (lot of numbers and stats) on topics as diverse as boybands, Build-a-Bear and nutrition to create beautiful data visualisations and informative infographics. http://www.pinterest.com/stemetteh/bipb-stemettes-data-hack-example-infographics/ Our sponsors, Business Intelligence specialists BIPB flew in Hannah Curtis – a consultant from their New York office to help girls get to grips with industry tool Qlikview and a big data feed from Twitter. Saturday started with some icebreaking activities, a delivery of muffins […]

An all-girl hackathon, organised by Stemettes, a project set up to encourage more girls to take up science, engineering, technology and maths (STEM), took over the Barbican Centre this weekend. The event saw sixty girls, some as young as eight, build their very first video games and mobile applications and present them to a jury of tech professionals. Adya, an eight-year-old girl who had never coded prior to the event, wowed the judges with her video game “My pet dog”, in which players earn points by taking care of a dog. The jury was impressed by the creativity and […]
