The following post is based on a speech given at Stemettes’ 3rd birthday celebrations by Yasmine Dankwah, who is currently a Student to Stemette (STS) sherpee. STS aims to inspire young women into STEM careers by connecting them with a woman in industry who actively mentors them over the course of four months. The programme is supported by Deutsche Bank.  I joined Stemettes because I was generally interested in technology – however, my school’s main focus was engineering and medicine so they did not cater for this area of STEM. For me, applying for Student to Stemette was an opportunity […]

I’m writing as a previous mentee (now known as Sherpee) to give you an insight into what a Sherpa means to girls like me who want to know more about STEM. My name is Ellie, I’m 18, I’m going to university next week and I was in the first cohort of Sherpees to be put forward onto this very scheme. I thought that since the launch, Student to Stemette has been and still is a great idea and I am so happy I took time applying for it. Along with Sherpas from Deutsche Bank who could help us give their […]

It’s been a short while since we kicked off our first ever Student to Stemette mentoring cohort as part of Deutsche Bank’s Born to Be campaign and the UK government’s Your Life campaign. In the time it’s been running we’ve matched 40 girls all over the UK to mentors at Deutsche Bank who have helped them work on strengths & weaknesses, discover new STEM career paths and given them a bit of a boost towards becoming fully fledged Big Stemettes. In addition to the mentor meetings, we’ve run a series of ‘Student to Stemette’ webinars each featuring fantastic women in […]

We’ve been running the Student to Stemette programme for girls aged 16 and over for a while now. So far, a cohort of girls have been matched with mentors from our programme partner Deutsche Bank, and listened in on two webinars. Last week, we ran a successful ‘Career management and roles‘ webinar featuring some fantastic women from STEM Industry, Academia and Recruitment – who all gave their perspective on navigating the opportunities available in STEM. Ask for job shadowing, look for that special project – challenge yourself! Great advice from Dee Clark for @StudentStemette #sts14 — bee (@beethakore) July 23, 2014 […]

I’ve always wanted a mentor and having gained one in the last year I’m really pleased. I know many women still wish they had one. It’s no surprise, then, that the women in the room understood just how special what was about to take place at the Stemette’s Mentor Matching event was, as soon-to-be STEM-enthusiast mentees and Deutsche Bank women in STEM mentors filled the room. As the girls and women settled, it was clear that our prospective mentees also had a sense of the uniqueness of this situation. Chatting, sharing excitement, smiling and relieving their nerves in frenzied unison. […]

Thank you September!

September is nearly over and as expected, we’ve been doing a lot of planning this month. There have also been a couple of highlights and lots of opportunities that have been sent to us. Check them out below – there’s a lot to get through! September roundup We kicked off September with a couple of appearances at Campus Party with the EU Commissioner for Innovation and Mozilla Foundation CEO Mark Surman. Head Stemette also joined a Women in Technology panel. Some of the girls who won tickets to Campus Party were there to witness it all – and of course […]
