Wow, 2018, what a year! This year marked our 5th anniversary and we went BIG to celebrate. From Derry to Morpeth, from Glasgow to Guernsey, we went all over the UK to inspire girls and show them the opportunities within STEM. We welcomed guests from all 4 nations and from all walks of life – including royalty. 2018 has been a truly unforgettable year for us, meeting thousands of you. While we’re still writing up events of the last few months, here are some 2018 highlights..

February

BAE systems hosted us for our 1st public event in 2018 and it was an incredible event to kick off the year!

In the same month Stemettes turned 5, so of course, we had to celebrate in style! Go Think Big hosted us for a fabulous night of reflection and cake.

March

As we all know, International Women’s Day falls in March, so it only seemed right for us to pull out all the stops. We held a panel event at Legal & General Investment Management, in London, which was a storming success despite the snow. We also had a spectacular hackathon event with Microsoft Research, in Cambridge, in which girls learned to code with Minecraft.

We then  headed to Birmingham for an extra special event at Millennium Point. We not only had a panel to inspire the young girls, but we also had a range of STEM activities lined up, for which non-other than the Duke & Duchess of Sussex joined us for.

April

It was a very happy Easter for us at Schroders HQ in London. This spring event was two-days of  fun, food and app building. Check out the pictures on our Flickr.

June, July & August

Schools were out for summer, but the STEM fun is never over! In June, Oracle Academy hosted us for a summer-themed hackathon. We also brought the summer fun to Rise London, in August, for another sensational hackathon creating a range of  useful apps: from saving money to saving the environment.

In July, Deutsche Bank hosted us for a very special event: our Student to Stemette Graduation Evening. Although not as formal as prom, it was certainly a night to remember – see Flickr.

September

September brought us to Glasgow for our 1st AlGirlRhythm event because who said music and tech don’t mix? Go Think Big hosted us for an incredible day exploring live music and technology, whilst showing young women how to build on their employability, confidence and network!

We also partnered with CloudNC for the first time for a panel event in London. It was a lovely evening focused on start-up companies and how to be a BOSS.

October

October was our biggest month of the year, with 4 panel events, 3 hackathons and the first leg of our #MonsterConfidence tour! We were super excited to partner with some incredible companies for our panel events throughout the month: Legal & General Investment Merchant, BAE systems, Air Products and NHS England.

We had 3 hackathon events over the month – one focused on Wikipedia editing at Imperial College, a 2-day hack at the Bank of America Merrill Lynch, and a hack that brought us up north to UST Global in Leeds.

Our biggest event of the year with almost 500 girls and young women in attendance was MonsterConfidence London. It was a day packed with inspiration, networking and confidence building.

Then, two days later we launched our first ever Scottish mentoring cohort, up in Glasgow with Morgan Stanley. Phew!

November

Winter officially arrived but that didn’t slow Stemettes down. We brought our MonsterConfidence tour to Birmingham, Manchester, Bristol and Derry. Combined, we welcomed more than 1000 girls to our 5 Monster Confidence events.  It was our third year running the tour and it was our best year yet. A huge thank you to Monster and everyone that partnered with us to make the tour such a success.

We also ran 3 more events with NHS England. We hosted a panel event and a hackathon in London and another hackathon in Leeds. These events helped us shine light on the importance of tech in healthcare – MedTech – and of course the importance of women being a part of it.

December

The last month of the year starting did not slow us down. We headed up to Glasgow to host an Alzheimers hackathon for girls at DXC’s impressive offices and then held 2 follow-up Go Think Big AlGirlRhythm events. Our fantastic keynotes from Abbey Road lifted each event and brought the importance of Technology in Music to the fore. We closed out with final school programme events at Anglo American and EY. And then it was time for TeamStemette to take a well needed break.

A huge thank you to everyone that attended and contributed to our events this year. We look forward to a STEMazing 2019 and hope you continue to join in with STEM fun.
