We headed up north in March for a STEMtastic weekend in Newcastle with DXC Technology! On Saturday 2nd and Sunday 3rd, DXC Technology hosted 47 girls and young women for a 2-day hackathon Stemettes style! After some icebreakers, the girls knuckled down to work on their apps using HTML, AppShed and App Inventor. This International Women’s Day, Stemettes spent the day at EDF Trading with 20 young women learning about Trading and building websites. The day kicked off with an icebreaker from EDF Trading, which taught the girls the basics of trading by having to trade fun items provided. We then went on a treasure hunt around EDF Trading offices in London and the girls visited the trading floor, where they got to see live Trading and realised it wasn’t like what they had seen in the films! Stemettes proudly partnered with NHS England and NHS Digital in 2018 to bring four events to London and Leeds. The NHS hosted us for a panel and hackathon event in each city and we had over 240 girls and young women join us in total. Mallaigh and Caelainn are Year 13 students from Derry and attended MonsterConfidence Derry in 2018. They were 2 of 5 winners invited to spend a day at Veolia’s Donaghadee plant during April. On Tuesday 30th April 2019 we departed Thornhill College, which was an early start to make our way to Donaghadee for our work shadowing opportunity. We started the morning with a Health and Safety presentation that was required for the site tour of the Water Treatment Works.
