Wow, 2018, what a year! This year marked our 5th anniversary and we went BIG to celebrate. From Derry to Morpeth, from Glasgow to Guernsey, we went all over the UK to inspire girls and show them the opportunities within STEM. We welcomed guests from all 4 nations and from all walks of life – including royalty. 2018 has been a truly unforgettable year for us, meeting thousands of you. While we’re still writing up events of the last few months, here are some 2018 highlights.. February BAE systems hosted us for our 1st public event in 2018 and it […]

September 25th was no ordinary Tuesday. The Biscuit Factory in London hosted Stemettes for our very first event with CloudNC! At this panel event, we discussed how start-ups offer maximum impact opportunities. Young women learnt about the many ways to be part of building emerging technologies that are driving industry change across the world and networked with our STEMazing panellists! Direna attended the event and was so inspired by the night, she reached and sent in blog! Here’s what she had to say: ‘Meet the Stemettes at CloudNC was an amazing evening. I got the chance to network with women […]

On September 22nd, Glasgow hosted us for a day of tech and music at AlGirlRhythm. Held in the O2 Academy, young women met people from across the music industry, technology industry, engineering and also MusicTech, with the help of our friends Go Think Big. We welcomed some amazing music performances to inspire the young women: Erin Mchugh Nuala Bennett-Wilford WondRWomN Throughout the day we ran a range of panels and workshops, workshops included app building with SwarmOnline and ‘We don’t want to talk about failure’. This post has been written by Harper, 7 who is in primary school and attended our ‘Summer Fun with Oracle Academy & Stemettes’ event on 23 June 2018. I love Stemettes because you can code and have fun at the same time. The first thing you do is have scrumptious food and drinks then you go into a place where the person who runs Stemettes has a smile and a speech. After that, you have icebreakers which are  REALLY FUN !!! Then you CODE !!!!! At the Oracle hack, we used an app called Alice 3 and it was really […]

This post has been written by Eden, 8 who is at primary school and attended our ‘Stemettes Rise Hack #2‘ event on 22 & 23 August 2018. I am Eden and I am 8 years old. The first time I did coding was in school when I was 6 years old in Year 1. I used Purple Mash. At first I thought it was a scrumptious meal, or a beetroot with big feet stomping everywhere! That’s because I like cooking so food is always on my mind. Talking about food, in the summer holidays I did some gardening and planted some marrow peas, […]

At Stemettes we love running school trips, especially when we get to take pupils out to visit real STEM environments. On Wednesday 11th July Stemettes travelled to Maidenhead where Blackberry hosted a ‘Meet the Stemettes’ panel. Girls from local schools (Furze Platt Senior School, Altwood School, and Trevelyan Middle School)  where able to meet and network with female STEM role models. The day kicked off with an introduction to the fantastic panel: Mari-Ann Meling –Front End Developer, Treatwell Ella Hodge – Talent Acquisition Coordinator, BlackBerry Dr Renata Gomes – Head of Research and Innovation, Blind Veterans UK Trudie Fell – Head […]

This post has been written by Aryana, 9, and Sofia, 7 who are both at primary school and attended our ‘Summer Fun with Oracle Academy & Stemettes’ event on 23 June 2018. After an early start, we arrived bursting with excitement. It was a scorching summer’s day which started with an Icebreaker to help the children make friends and learn interesting facts about each other. It was amazing seeing so many girls interested in technology! Over the course of the day we made an interactive and engaging game. Our game was about an alien who had crash landed on a […]

Serena is studying her A-levels in Edinburgh and Anamarija studying for a Chemistry degree at Heriot-Watt University. They were 2 of 5 prize winners at MonsterConfidence Edinburgh in 2017 and visited Veolia’s London sites during March 2018. Serena At the beginning and throughout the day, it was lovely to meet the other girls who had also won the trip to London. Everyone was there because they displayed Monster Confidence and had an interest in STEM. I have learnt that STEM can be accessible even when you do not pursue a STEM career path, and that it can be linked to […]

Elizabeth is studying for A-levels in Winchester and attended MonsterConfidence Southampton in 2017. She was one of 5 prize winners invited to spend a day at Veolia’s London plants during March 2018. This day gave me a real insight into the world of engineering; something you don’t get when you are at school or college. On arrival I was greeted by friendly faces from the Stemettes team as well as those at the Veolia recycling site. The smell was less welcoming! The morning was spent touring the recycling centre, seeing how they sort all the different materials- mechanically, optically, using […]
