At Stemettes we love running school trips, especially when we get to take pupils out to visit real STEM environments. On Wednesday 11th July Stemettes travelled to Maidenhead where Blackberry hosted a ‘Meet the Stemettes’ panel. Girls from local schools (Furze Platt Senior School, Altwood School, and Trevelyan Middle School)  where able to meet and network with female STEM role models. The day kicked off with an introduction to the fantastic panel: Mari-Ann Meling –Front End Developer, Treatwell Ella Hodge – Talent Acquisition Coordinator, BlackBerry Dr Renata Gomes – Head of Research and Innovation, Blind Veterans UK Trudie Fell – Head […]

This post has been written by Aryana, 9, and Sofia, 7 who are both at primary school and attended our ‘Summer Fun with Oracle Academy & Stemettes’ event on 23 June 2018. After an early start, we arrived bursting with excitement. It was a scorching summer’s day which started with an Icebreaker to help the children make friends and learn interesting facts about each other. It was amazing seeing so many girls interested in technology! Over the course of the day we made an interactive and engaging game. Our game was about an alien who had crash landed on a […]

Serena is studying her A-levels in Edinburgh and Anamarija studying for a Chemistry degree at Heriot-Watt University. They were 2 of 5 prize winners at MonsterConfidence Edinburgh in 2017 and visited Veolia’s London sites during March 2018. Serena At the beginning and throughout the day, it was lovely to meet the other girls who had also won the trip to London. Everyone was there because they displayed Monster Confidence and had an interest in STEM. I have learnt that STEM can be accessible even when you do not pursue a STEM career path, and that it can be linked to […]

Elizabeth is studying for A-levels in Winchester and attended MonsterConfidence Southampton in 2017. She was one of 5 prize winners invited to spend a day at Veolia’s London plants during March 2018. This day gave me a real insight into the world of engineering; something you don’t get when you are at school or college. On arrival I was greeted by friendly faces from the Stemettes team as well as those at the Veolia recycling site. The smell was less welcoming! The morning was spent touring the recycling centre, seeing how they sort all the different materials- mechanically, optically, using […]

Naomi is studying for A-levels in Spalding, Lincolnshire and attended MonsterConfidence Sheffield in 2017. She was one of 5 prize winners invited to spend a day at Veolia’s London plants during March 2018. Wednesday 14th March marked what would’ve been Einstein’s 139th birthday and pi day therefore it seemed apt that this would be the day on which the winners would visit Veolia. (The day also marked the unfortunate death of Stephen Hawking.) I was expecting to feel lonely as I didn’t know anyone who was going. On the contrary, I felt at quite home for, once I began to […]

Esly Esly is a student in Dublin who attended MonsterConfidence Dublin in 2017 and was one of 5 prize winners invited to spend a day at Veolia’s London plants in March. Karina On the 14th of March, winners from the MonsterConfidence Tour 2017, met at Veolia’s Southwark Integrated Waste Management Facility for a tour of the premises. When we arrived, we were introduced to Rachel, who was our guide for the day, and then put into different groups. We were shown an induction video on health and safety at Veolia and asked to complete a questionnaire afterwards. When that was […]

This post has been written by Ava, 7, who is at primary school and attended our ‘Schroders App Hack: Easter Edition‘ event on 5 & 6 April 2018. I was really excited when I learned I was going to build an app. I didn’t expect the amazing pastries when I arrived. It made me even more excited to be treated like royalty. I’ve never done any coding but it didn’t matter because there were lots of friendly helpers. My app didn’t win but that isn’t stopping me. I’ve been building another app using the Stemettes links and have started using […]

This post has been written by Mary, 6, who is at primary school and attended our ‘Stemettes Hack Cambridge @ Microsoft Research‘ event on 17 & 18 March 2018. My name is Mary, I am 6 years old, it was my first time at Stemettes, and my first time doing Minecraft. It was a bit difficult but I quickly grasped it because it was similar to Scratch. On my first day I learnt all of the functions and we coded our Agent to make it rain chickens. Then we started connecting coding blocks to make it rain chickens, I did […]

We, Stemettes, love great school trips. We get to run about 40 a year and especially enjoy the ones when we get to take pupils out of the school environment, into real world STEM ones. We did our very first school trip to fashion e-commerce giant ASOS on 5th March 2018 and had pupils from 3 London schools at their Camden HQ. The day kicked off with a tour of everything ASOS – from the stock room, to the photo studios to their tech teams and their canteen. We then got to know lots of their #womenintech – who worked […]

3rd March was an incredibly snowy day in London. It was also the date we’d chosen to host our special International Women’s Day ‘Meet the Stemettes’ panel event at LGIM’s offices in London. LGIM, short for Legal & General Investment Management handle money for millions of people across the globe and use maths and technology to keep it safe, invest it and grow it for their customers. Despite the snowy inches and very limited transport options, we had a full house (with a few more of top of that) so kicked off with introductions to our fantastic panel: Faduma Mohammed […]
