Stemettes partnered with the Avantor Foundation on 5th February 2022 to deliver a virtual hackathon event on the theme of Health, in line with World Cancer Day.
The one-day event was open to young women and non-binary people who worked together in groups to identify a cancer research, diagnosis, or treatment issue and design a product or business solution for it.
At the end of the day, the groups presented their ideas to the Avantor Foundation judges, Team Stemette, and other event participants.

Participants were asked to rate the event and gave it a score of 9.38 out of 10 and 100% of participants would attend another Stemettes event.
Participants saw an improvement in confidence and connecting with other participants and role models as unexpected benefits of the event.
After the event, 88% of participants felt their confidence in their STEM abilities and their knowledge of STEM improved.
The greatest improvement in our impact metrics came in their network in STEM fields, with a 26% increase after the event.
What was their favourite part?
Participants identified meeting role models and working in groups as their favourite parts of the event. Some of them were introduced to Canva for the first time and found it both challenging and rewarding to use it.
“I still really want to study medicine and become a doctor, in this hack there were people who studied biomedicine so it was really helpful to learn more about the course” – Hackathon Participant
Thank you to the Avantor Foundations and everyone who took part, and congratulations to the winning group: MelanoMap!
