To celebrate Ada Lovelace Day on October 13th 2020, G-Research and Stemettes visited schools across the UK to increase the students’ STEM awareness and perception. Stemettes were joined virtually by 123 students across year 9, 10 and 11. They came from schools in: Chertsey, Leicester, Northamptonshire, Coventry and West Yorkshire. 12 women from STEM industry, academia and entrepreneurship tuned into classrooms to inspire students to think about a future in STEM. During Coronavirus lockdown we’ve been reminiscing about our Stemettes Future Summit. Our summits took place in both Chester and London in July 2019, and we hosted 200 attendees. On 13th July we hosted our second summit in London. We invited 150 girls and split them into under 8s, 8-12 and 13-18 year old groups. Day-long event to inspire and equip girls and young women for technical careers across academia, industry and entrepreneurship. On Saturday 23rd November, we partnered with LGIM again for another ‘Meet the Stemettes’ panel event. We hosted 54 girls, and 62 people overall, who listened to our panellists share their journeys into STEM. The girls later joined a speed networking session where they received advice about how to get into STEM career. So we collected feedback from the women in STEM session, and the girls rated the event 7.9 out of 10! Stemettes hosted 44 people at the UST Global Hack, of which 27 girls learnt HTML and used Appinventor or Glitch to build their own apps. We teamed up with UST Global on the 28th and 29th October to run a two-day hackathon in Leeds.
At Meet the Stemettes @ Just Eat on the 23rd October 2019 we were joined by 39 girls. The girls got to explore STEM apprenticeships, A-level choices, university degrees and work experiences.
Stemettes invited 50 girls to create their own app. We took over The Gherkin in London and hosted a two-day hackathon in partnership with DXC Technology. The girls aged 5-22 learnt the basics of HTML and UX design.
Stemettes partnered with TD Securities on the 15th October, inviting 25 school girls on a tour of the TD Securities office and a panel of role models.
Stemettes teamed up with BAE Systems on the 11th October to run a STEM Goals session with 45 girls. The girls learned HTML and used Glitch to make a website about cybersecurity.
Stemettes took over the Rise London offices on August 21st and 22nd 2019 for a hackathon. Rise, by Barclays, is the home of fintech (financial technology) and together we partnered for a hackathon theme titled ‘Using your money for good with the help of technology’. We hosted 58 girls (with some boys too) aged 5-22 to attend the hackathon, where they learnt how to build an app. Our young coders formed into three groups; Dough, Dollar and Dosh.
