Stemettes took over the Rise London offices on August 21st and 22nd 2019 for a hackathon. Rise, by Barclays, is the home of fintech (financial technology) and together we partnered for a hackathon theme titled ‘Using your money for good with the help of technology’. We hosted 58 girls (with some boys too) aged 5-22 to attend the hackathon, where they learnt how to build an app. Our young coders formed into three groups; Dough, Dollar and Dosh. Dough coded their app using AppShed; Dollar used AppInventor to create their app and Dosh leveraged Glitch code their app. Congratulations to […]
On the 31st July, the Stemettes invited 61 girls aged 13 years old and above to a career panel event with seven amazing women in STEM.
Stemettes partnered with KPMG and invited young women in their second or final year of university to find out what a day-in-the-life is like working in Technology.
The following post is written by 13-year-old Jamila Bihi, who attended Rise Hack with her sister Naima. Naima is an Outbox Incubator alumnus and founder of Modlyst – an online community for modest fashion. Rise Hack, hosted by Stemettes and sponsored by Rise London in partnership with Barclays, was held on 5-6 March to celebrate International Women’s Day. When my sister first announced that I would be going to my first hackathon I was so excited that I barely got a wink of sleep for the following few nights. As the days flew past, I got more and more nervous. Finally Saturday […]
The following post is based on a speech given at Stemettes’ 3rd birthday celebrations by Yasmine Dankwah, who is currently a Student to Stemette (STS) sherpee. STS aims to inspire young women into STEM careers by connecting them with a woman in industry who actively mentors them over the course of four months. The programme is supported by Deutsche Bank. I joined Stemettes because I was generally interested in technology – however, my school’s main focus was engineering and medicine so they did not cater for this area of STEM. For me, applying for Student to Stemette was an opportunity […]
On Saturday 7 November, Meet the Stemettes panel events took place simultaneously in London and Dublin – sponsored and hosted by Bank of America Merrill Lynch. For a full run-down of the day’s events – from how we almost lost Events Stemette Charlotte under a tsunami of goodie bags, to inspiring advice from our panelists, to how many Stemettes it takes to defeat a Luas ticket machine (clue: more than one) – check out our Storify of the day’s events here. Our next panel event is happening on 5th December at Imperial College and we’ll be in Manchester doing an Animation […]
This blog post has been written by Savinay, 13 who attended the event and is also an alumnus from Outbox Incubator. Our video from the event is at the bottom of this blog. The day kicked off at around eleven when I arrived at Bank of America Merrill Lynch in Central London. The building was absolutely incredible, open and modern. Since I was a volunteer for the day I spent the first few hours behind a desk checking people in with a nifty piece of technology that made the inner tech nerd within me squeal a little! You just had to […]
We always look forward to coming to Newcastle. Possibly because of the lower temperatures; maybe because of the long distance we have to travel; definitely because of how friendly and lovely the people are. This was no different the day of our #thanksAda panel event on Thursday 15th October at the fantastic Campus North. Sponsored by Tech North (who look after tech startups across the North) we brought together a slightly more intimate panel than usual for Toon Army. Campus North is a colourful crowdfunded space for startups and tech companies who want to be based in Newcastle. We found […]
It’s funny how, when something is gone, it doesn’t always mean that it’s actually physically gone. It doesn’t mean that you don’t have the memories, that when you sit in the place where it once was, you can’t still feel it in the air. I’m sitting in the Outbox Incubator house. It is empty. The beds are empty. The fridge and kitchen cupboards are empty. It is empty of laptops. It is empty of Outbox execs. And it is silent for the first time in 6 weeks. But everywhere we look, as the team sits around, we can see groups […]
As we arrived at Chester station at 11:46 on June 27th, we were overwhelmed by the number of people who had arrived with us and made a guess at the proportion of the crowd that had arrived in town for our ‘Meet the Stemettes’ panel and the proportion who were in town for the Chester races. We found a taxi, jumped in and headed for our venue – the Bank of America Merrill Lynch mbna offices in Chester Business Park. The taxi pulled up outside one of the more impressive, fancy, Buckingham Palace-like venues we’ve ever been to and we […]
