A 3 step-guide for how to help you decide what to do for A-levels.

First and foremost, congratulations and well done for considering A-Level at all – it is not a route everyone takes post-GCSE! Secondly, it’s a great question to ask because you’re thinking about the next steps before you get there and lastly it’s a fantastic question to ask as it shows you have an end in mind.

This can be broken down into 3 parts:

  1. Think about what you want to do when you’re older
  2. Consider STEM subjects
  3. Speak to as many people as possible (especially those have done A-Level before)

Think about what you want to do when you’re older

Think about what you want to do when you are older and where you see yourself. What subjects will give you the best possible chance of doing that? Also if you do not know what you want to do when you’re older choose subjects that will give you the most choice of the possible careers you can go into after A-level. This is where STEM comes in.

Consider STEM Subjects

You can choose English, History and the Arts but you have to ask yourself what professions do these subjects provide a gateway into? Where can they lead to? While these subjects are leading to a growing number of careers, occupations and roles in organisations that have never existed before, STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) subjects give you more access to a wider range of careers than any other group of subjects.

Maths is versatile. It can be used or deployed in any field. Science is nature and Engineering and Technology are the base of modern existence. There’s always a job and career available in this sector for you. Think about where you want to go – whether that be in life or at University – what you want to do and how A-levels will help you get there.

Speak to as many people as possible

Speak to as many people as possible especially those who have done A-Level before because that can act as a great guide to point you in the right direction as to where you start your A-Level subject choices from.
