In the early days of the internet, before all of the social media apps you use today, websites used to look a lot different. Many people had their own blogs, where they shared the things they loved, what they were doing, and anything else they wanted to share. These websites used to look more like a decorated bedroom than a curated social media profile, and we think they should make a comeback by incorporating art and personal style back into the internet!
So, what are some of the cornerstones of old web decoration?
- Clashing patterns and scrapbook-type decoration.
- ‘Vintage’ aesthetics, like old browser pop-ups seen in this Tumblr blog.
- GIFs, and lots of them, dedicated to the creator’s interests and vibes. You can find some examples here and here.
- Cute illustrations like this blog, here.
As you can see, there’s a lot about this type of blogging that is very expressive and personal. If you want to create something similar, you don’t need coding knowledge, just curiosity and time. A lot of these blogs copied HTML from someone else’s page!
Maybe it’s time to bring some of that DIY messiness back. Start a blog. Learn a little CSS. Make something ugly on purpose. Not for followers, but for fun. The web still has hidden corners that feel like yours alone; you just have to dig a little!
