What Should I Do After Graduating?

Advice

Hey fellow graduates! As graduation season rolls around, if you find yourself at a crossroads, transitioning from the familiar routines of university life to the vast unknown of the future it’s a time of excitement, anticipation, and perhaps a touch of uncertainty.

If you’re one of these students like me, wondering what to do next and navigating this pivotal moment in your life can be daunting. Here are some tips that I’ve learned in my life not just from my family, Stemettes have also been a huge steering force in my life and my work as a humanitarian, advocate and campaigner.

Take time to reflect on your journey

Take a moment to reflect on your university experience. Great, good and perhaps not so well. What have you learned? What experiences have shaped you? Reflecting on your journey can help you gain clarity about your strengths, passions, and values, which can guide your next steps.

If there’s one thing I learned from Stemettes, it would be to think about what your short-term and long-term goals are. Whether it’s pursuing further education, starting a career, travelling, or something else entirely. Clarifying your goals can help you narrow down your options and make informed decisions about your future.

Explore your options

The post-university world is full of possibilities. The world is your oyster. Take the time to explore different paths and opportunities. Research potential career paths, internships, volunteer opportunities, and further education options. Talk to professionals in fields you’re interested in and seek advice from mentors.

Embrace change

Transitioning from university to the next phase of your life can be daunting, but it’s also an opportunity for growth and exploration. Embrace the changes that come your way and see them as opportunities for personal and professional development.

Build your network

Networking is key to discovering new opportunities and advancing your career. Connect with alumni, professionals in your field of interest, and other individuals who can offer guidance and support. Attend networking events, join professional organisations and utilise online platforms like LinkedIn to expand your network.

Use Your Time Wisely

Use this transitional period to develop new skills and enhance existing ones. Take advantage of online courses, workshops, and training programs to broaden your skill set and increase your marketability in the job market.

Be Flexible

Your path may not unfold exactly as planned, and that’s okay. Stay open-minded and flexible as you navigate this transition. Be willing to pivot, adapt, and seize unexpected opportunities that come your way. You’ve heard that saying ‘every day is a school day’ – always learning.

Practice Self Care

Always, always take CARE OF YOURSELF. Transition periods can be stressful, so don’t forget to prioritise self-care. Take time to rest, recharge, and engage in activities that bring you joy and fulfilment. Surround yourself with supportive friends and family members who can offer encouragement and perspective.

Remember, transitioning from university to what comes next is a journey, not a destination. Embrace the journey, trust in yourself, and have confidence that you have the skills and resilience to navigate whatever lies ahead.

Huge congratulations on reaching this milestone, and best of luck on your next adventure!

Summer.
