Applying for Scholarships

Advice

Applying for a scholarship or grant is no easy feat, and you may need to write an application. This application could be in the form of an essay, form or video. In my experience, the broader the brief for the application itself, the harder it is to apply. So, I have come up with some tips for folks applying for grants or scholarships.

  • Research the scholarship. You want to understand the organisation that’s providing your scholarship or award. This means you can tailor your application to show your connection to them and their mission.
  • Take your time completing your application. Often you might see a scholarship that you’re excited about and want to apply that same day. Unless you’re coming up to the deadline, it’s better to take your time writing the application. Create a draft and review it! You can also review your application with others to ensure you’re coming across well.
  • Elevate your applications. Add extra information that will support your application. If possible, add attachments to your application such as evidence of your academics or commitment to your studies or industry.
  • Tell a story. The people who are reviewing applications will read a lot of applications. You want to make yourself stand out. The best way to do that is to make the application personal. Tell a story in your application which the reviewer can connect with. This could be how this award would be transformational for your past/future in your studies.
  • Seek out letters of recommendation. A letter of recommendation can boost your application. This may be from your academic tutor, a manager, or a volunteering leader, for example. The recommendation should be tailored towards what you’re applying for. Make sure that the person writing the letter of recommendation is aware of the scholarship or grant. You could suggest some traits or attitudes they could highlight in their recommendation.

Wishing you the best of luck in your applications!
