Architecture isn’t just about bricks and mortar, but also about creativity! Women architects have been showcasing their skills by creating beautiful, innovative designs around the world, and we’ve listed some of our faves below.
Heydar Aliyev Centre
You can find the Heydar Aliyev Centre in Baku, Azerbaijan. It’s an amazing, large, futuristic building. It was created by Zaha Hadid, who was known as the “Queen of the Curve”, and you can definitely see why in this design! Not only is it a bold symbol of modern architecture, but it’s also a space for many activities. It houses an auditorium, a cultural centre, and a museum!
National Museum of African American History and Culture
Zena Howard was a key architect and project leader for the National Museum of African American History and Culture in the USA (Washington). Her influence was huge, and the bronze exterior that looks like a crown is not only striking but symbolic, too.
Parc de la Villette
The Parc de la Villette in Paris is not only the largest open park in Europe, but is also the largest deconstructed building in the world! Elizabeth Diller was one of the main contributors to this project, and it helped her co-found her own architecture firm. Public spaces are so important for the community, making this project extra special.
Maggie’s Centres
Amanda Levete and other women architects designed these beautiful cancer care centres across the UK! They aren’t just buildings; they’re also places of comfort for so many people. They were designed with care and sensitivity and remind us how architecture can help us heal.
The Vietnam Pavilion
Many women worked on this big bamboo structure from Expo Milan 2015. Not only is it a sustainable design, but it also showcases art and immersive/interactive displays. This building has an important message. It aims to highlight the importance of not only feeding your body but your mind, too!
From curvy cultural centres to bamboo pavilions, these women have built legacies that inspire the next generation, one blueprint at a time. So, which one was your favourite?
