Ever wanted to crack a secret code, or build the puzzle that stumps everyone else?

Ciphers & Quests is a one-day STEAM hackathon on Saturday 30 January 2027, from 9:45 am to 5:00 pm in London, for girls, young women and non-binary people aged 5 to 25. You’ll work in a team to decode secret messages and build games and puzzles around them, choosing the challenge that suits you. With different challenges to suit you, you can build a game in Scratch or MakeCode Arcade, learn different ciphers and crack coded messages, or design a cipher-based escape room using Figma and Thunkable. Plus, goody bags, lunch, and all the tech provided!

The agenda

  • 10:00-10:40: Welcome and icebreakers
  • 10:40-12:00: Introduction to the project and hacking begins!
  • 12:00-12:45: Lunch
  • 12:45-14:15: Hacking continues
  • 14:15-14:30: Presentation skills session
  • 14:30-15:00: Hacking continues and project submission
  • 15:10-16:50: Showcase, judging, and feedback
  • 16:50-17:00: Prizes and photos
