A Day in the Life of a Full-Stack Developer: Insights from Alina

Technology

Hello, I’m Alina! Originally from Ukraine, I now live and work in the UK as a Full-Stack Software Developer. I specialise in developing functionalities within the Salesforce platform, and I’ve been doing so at technology company called Gentrack for nearly two years.

Software development might sound familiar to many, given that we live in an age dominated by technology. But the term “software developer” covers a wide range of professions, each with its unique focus. Let me walk you through what my particular role entails and what a typical day looks like.

What Does a Software Developer Do?

Contrary to the stereotype of developers spending their days typing away behind a keyboard, our work is dynamic and diverse. At its core, being a software developer means crafting applications, programs, and functionalities to meet user needs or improve lives. This involves designing, testing, and maintaining software, which requires a mix of creativity, problem-solving, and collaboration.

My day often shifts between focused, independent problem-solving and brainstorming sessions with my team. These “hive mind” moments are some of the most exciting, as we pool our collective knowledge to tackle challenges and innovate.

Research and continuous learning are staples of a developer’s life, too. The tech world evolves rapidly and staying up-to-date ensures that our solutions remain valuable. Coding, in many ways, is like solving a puzzle—it demands attention to detail, perseverance, and creativity. The satisfaction of fitting the final piece is unmatched, offering both a sense of achievement and renewed confidence.

Documentation is another essential part of my day. Writing clear, structured guides ensures others (and sometimes my future self!) can understand and build upon the work. This investment of time upfront saves a lot of headaches down the road.

Why I Love My Job

Every project brings opportunities to enhance user experiences. Finding the best way to solve a problem or improve functionality is an adventure, and I relish the challenges it presents. These moments’ drive innovation, foster growth, and allow me to contribute meaningfully to both my team and the people who use Gentrack’s software.

Opportunities in Software Development

Software development is a thriving field with opportunities across industries such as finance, healthcare, energy, publishing, and manufacturing. A career in this field offers flexibility—remote work is common, allowing for better work-life balance. Being able to spend time with family or handle routine tasks during breaks is a significant perk!

Career paths in software development often start with earning a bachelor’s degree in computer science or a related field. However, alternative routes like associate degrees, bootcamps, and certificates can also equip you with the necessary skills. What matters most is a commitment to learning and adapting in this fast-paced industry.

Encouraging Women in Tech

It’s no secret that women are underrepresented in software development. I hope this changes for future generations. To young girls considering careers in STEM: believe in yourself and your abilities.

Pursue the education and training that align with your dreams. Don’t fear failure—it’s one of the most powerful ways to learn and grow.

Software development is not just a career; it’s an opportunity to create, solve, and inspire. For me, it’s a journey of continuous improvement, professional growth, and, most importantly, helping others.

If you’re passionate about innovation and problem-solving, this might be the perfect field for you. Dive in—you might just find your calling!
