What Is The Best Piece Of Advice You’ve Ever Received?

Advice

Take every opportunity because you never know what’s going to happen
– Savinay, A-Level Student

You won’t get anything if you don’t ask. This helped me a lot when it came to getting opportunities I wanted. If I didn’t reach out to employers or quit on the first try then I wouldn’t have gotten my first job. My previous job turned me down 30 times before they said yes.

My science teacher says this all the time: It isn’t “I don’t know” but “I don’t know *yet* ”
– Omodolapo, GCSE Student

The best advice I received is successful people make mistakes.
– Inesse, Stemette Society Member

The best piece of advice I received was to take risks and follow your gut instinct, and to learn from your mistakes because that takes us to the next level. Be humble and always give back.
– Oishi, Stemette Society Member

When I was trying to find the courage to do something I was afraid of, I was told that the courage is within us all the time: it’s like this thin silver line that we worry to cross, but once you leap over it, you realize how small and easy that is.
– Rhea, Maths Student

When there’s a challenge in your life, don’t think ‘why me’, think ‘try me’. This advice always motivates me when things go wrong 🙂
– Ayman, Year 12 Student

The best piece of advice I ever got was to give myself 3 goals every day; say them to myself as I looked in the mirror. It doesn’t matter if the goals are literally: get out of bed, brush your teeth and have breakfast- giving yourself goals will give yourself a purpose and the goals, by nature, get bigger and bigger every day!
– Liberty, Year 12 College Student

Not advice per se, but this is something that a teacher told me once that has really stuck with me: *challenge becomes change* it always reminds me that if you don’t challenge yourself and leave your comfort zone, you’re not going to grow as a person, improve your skills and become better than you were before. always challenge yourself, and you will grow- the challenge becomes change
– Sona, University Student

Although anxiety is scary, it’s a lot easier to manage if you use it as a compass. For example, something you feel anxious about doing is usually the exact thing you should do, because it leads to the most growth, and makes you a stronger person!
– Angel, Animal Welfare & Behaviour Student

For me, it has been something that got said and I still get told a lot, but it took me a long time to realise the power and strength you feel when you follow through with it. It started with set photos ( e.g. the school class picture) and we all would have to line up by height. I’m tall but always try to be smaller than I am. Be yourself I got told. Many situations like this later, being told to be myself was one of the reasons I decided to go for a level physics, being the only girl in an all-male class :(, and not follow my friends down the art route. In hindsight possibly not the best idea graded wise but I loved every second of it, and I’m now in the mids of a mechanical engineering degree! So be yourself, it hasn’t failed me yet!
– Anita, University Student

I’m not sure who/if anyone has explicitly said this to me but: don’t be a sheep! Most people spend their teenage years trying to work out how to fit in, just to hit adulthood and find out that they should be trying to stand out. Be yourself, because everyone else is already taken.
