I’m the Only Black Woman in a Company, What Can I Do?

Advice

Being the only black woman in a company can be isolating and especially challenging. But remember—you’re not alone in what you’re feeling! Many black women have faced similar hardships but have gone on to be successful in their fields and continue to thrive!

Here are a few strategies to help you cope and navigate through any unease and discomfort:

  1. Find positive role models. Check out specific hashtags on social media like #womeninstem or even niche it down to #blackwomeninstem. You can then follow their career journeys and learn from their experiences for motivation.
  2. Build a support network. Reach out to those you trust and share your frustrations. Professionally, you can seek guidance and advice from a mentor by contacting senior professionals in your field or through formal mentorship programs like our Student to Stemette Programme. Also, consider joining organisations or groups that cater to Black professionals or women in your industry.
  3. Prioritise self-care. Dedicate time to yourself daily to engage in activities that allow you to destress and unwind. Learn to set boundaries and never be afraid to say “no” if you feel overwhelmed or uncomfortable. Your well-being is important and should never be overlooked!
  4. Advocate for yourself. Believe in your abilities and recognise your strengths, even if they go unacknowledged – you deserve to be in the room. If you experience mistreatment, learn who the appropriate person to speak to is (e.g., this could be your manager or your company’s HR department). Do not be afraid to speak up for yourself!

It’s undeniable that navigating the workplace as a black woman can feel complicated and unmanageable at times. Still, there are steps that you can take to set yourself up to experience the success that you deserve. By implementing the above strategies, you’ll be well on your way to growth and career success!
