About Stemettes

Stemettes is an award-winning social enterprise working across the UK & Ireland and beyond to inspire and support girls, young women and non-binary young people into Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Maths careers (known collectively as STEAM).

Our Mission

Engage, inform and connect the next generation of women and non-binary people into Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Maths (STEAM) by showcasing a diversity of people working in STEAM .

Our Vision

All young women & non-binary people can make informed decisions about careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Maths (STEAM), so that women and non-binary people can be proportionally represented in the field.

Our Values

We are intentionally inclusive
The beneficiaries voices are central to everything we do
We engage, inform and connect our young people today so that they can become our future leaders in STEAM
We strive to create happiness, well-being and authenticity
We recognise that it will take all of us, working together, to achieve our vision.

The Story of Stemettes

Stemettes was set up to help combat the lack of women and non-binary people in STEM in a new way…

Co-founder Anne-Marie decided to start Stemettes after hearing a keynote whilst attending the Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing in 2012.

It made her reflect on her experience of being 1 of 3 girls in a class of 70 studying Maths and Computer Science at university.

After attending a ‘Spotlight on STEM’ workshop run by Business in the Community she learnt that there’s a real problem with lack of women and non-binary people in STEM and so, she decided to take a new form of action centred on being free, being fun and having food.

So we’re a team doing all we can to help. We can’t have women leaders if they’re not joining the industry or are ignorant of STEM itself. Diversity is important in any industry – and STEM especially. Diversity of thought leads to innovation.
