Engage and champion young women and non-binary people to shape the future of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts & Maths (STEAM) by building a community where they belong, connect, and thrive together.
Women and non-binary people are proportionally represented in the field of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Maths (STEAM).
✓ Respect: We are intentionally inclusive
✓ Youth-centred: The beneficiaries voices are central to everything we do
✓ Future Focused: We engage, inform and connect our young people today so that they can become our future leaders in STEAM
✓ Joy: We strive to create happiness, well-being and authenticity
✓ Supportive: We recognise that it will take all of us, working together, to achieve our vision.
Anne-Marie Imafidon decided to start Stemettes after hearing a keynote at the Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing in 2012. This keynote made her reflect on her experience of being 1 of 3 girls in a class of 70 studying Maths and Computer Science at university.
After attending a workshop, she learnt that there’s a real problem with the lack of women and non-binary people in STEM, and so, she decided to take a new form of action centred on being free, being fun and having food.
So we’re a team doing all we can to help. We can’t have women and non-binary leaders if they’re not joining the industry or are ignorant of STEM & STEAM itself. Diversity is important in any industry – and STEM especially. Diversity of thought leads to innovation.
