15-year-old Super Stemette Hannah Kent wasn’t always so sure about exploring a career in STEM. However, that all changed when she applied to take part in the Stemettes summer STEM programme Outbox in 2020.
“My mum was trying to find things to entertain me as we weren’t doing anything over the summer and I was originally very reluctant and didn’t want to do it. I’m very glad she did as I’ve loved Stemettes, it’s helped me massively with discovering new interests and given me so many opportunities!”.
Since then she’s gone on to attend almost every holiday Explore programme, join our Stemette Society, achieve certifications in ICAgile training and cyber security, avail mentoring opportunities and take on more responsibility in her free time by becoming a Super Stemette.
Stemettes has been brilliant for me – as before my first Stemettes event I wasn’t sure about STEM subjects but you’ve given me a great insight into careers that would interest me.”
Hannah is doing a GCSE in computer science and enjoys being part of several orchestras. When she applied to take part in ICAgile training she said she wanted to understand how she could apply her programming skills to different ways of working in a team.
It would also be really interesting to see whether the principles apply in other fields, eg. music composition.”
Her interest in Stemettes has sparked an interest in STEM both in and out of school encouraging her to try out new projects at home.
I’m very passionate about cyber and computer science. I really enjoy coding and doing cyber challenges in my spare time! I’ve also been trying to code a website.”
As a Super Stemette, Hannah regularly offers to help her peers learn more about STEM and helps to support them on their own journeys when she is free. She also enjoys the benefits of being part of our closed social platform, the Stemette Society where Stemettes can interact and have fun.
“It’s helped me a lot with getting advice and discovering more opportunities to help me decide what to do in the future and I’ve also made some great friends!”
At the end of last year, Hannah offered to take part in an IG Live to help promote the About Us Scratch competition at the end of 2021 and regularly liaises with Team Stemette to help promote initiatives.
“Being a Super Stemette has also helped me with my confidence by running and hosting events.”
Hannah isn’t sure what she wants to do in the future, but thinks she will be heading down the STEM route – exploring all that the pathways have to offer.
“At the moment, Stemettes has got me interested in cyber security and data analytics so maybe something down one of those routes. Stemettes has been brilliant for me – as before my first Stemettes event I wasn’t sure about STEM subjects but you’ve given me a great insight into careers that you have helped me to discover.”
