On the 20th and 21st of December, Stemettes ran a free virtual Explore programme for young women and non-binary people aged 7-21. Sessions allowed them to participate in STEM activities, meet STEMazing role models, and network with their peers and STEM professionals.
The sessions were split into three age group streams: Junior (7-11 year olds); Connect (12-15 year olds); and Academy (16-21 year olds). The theme of the event was ‘Future World: How can STEM help us thrive in a post-lockdown era?’
Our teenage and young adult #DecemberExplore @Stemettes will be meeting STEM professionals and attending a lecture, workshop and Q&A session this morning.
Tips and tricks will be shared during networking this afternoon 💡#GirlsInSTEM #STEMeducation #HappyHolidays2021 pic.twitter.com/U7BQwm6eiX

Participants attended morning lectures, afternoon sessions, speed networking, and Instagram Live events. At the end of the second day, they had a Showcase session; an opportunity to share what they had learnt on the programme.
The programme was attended by 55 participants who rated the programme 9.36 out of 10.
What did participants think?
Their favourite parts were:
- meeting role models and getting their advice
- working in small groups and meeting like-minded people
- taking part in virtual activities
I enjoyed the speed networking, it was a great way to connect with other people and learn about various careers. – Academy Participant
The participants were asked to rank metrics before and after the programme to measure the impact of the programme.
- 98% felt their confidence in their STEM abilities increased
- 97% felt their network in STEM fields increased
- 96% felt their perception of STEM increased
Participants said that an increase in confidence and discovery of previously unknown STEM career paths were unexpected benefits of the programme.
Thank you to the Department for Transport for partnering with Stemettes on the event and to all the volunteers and role models who took part.
