RECAP: Week 8 of STEM Mode In

Week 8 was Sheila Scott’s week!

 

 

This Monday 37 attendees tuned in to follow along with our Stemillions Activity Pack (aka Meal Plan) based on Sheila Scott OBE. Sheila Scott was an English aviator who broke over 100 aviation records through her long-distance flight endeavours, which included a 34,000-mile “world and a half” flight in 1971. On this flight, she became the first person to fly over the North Pole in a small aircraft! Core Stemette Jazmin hosted a fun-filled Aviation session around this week’s role model. The attendees learned about Shelia Scott and her famous flights. During the activity, participants researched and made their paper aeroplanes. We discussed the advantages of different designs and the girls told the group how far their plane flew during the show and tell.

 

 

When we asked the attendees what they enjoyed most about the session they said:

“I enjoyed making the different types of aeroplanes – 2 sonic jets, 1 fast glider and 1 fun flyer. The second sonic jet I made was my favourite.  It was light pink, white and light blue.”

“I loved being able to research the aerodynamics behind aeroplanes, it was really interesting!”

 

 

On Wednesday, 37 attendees joined Event Stemette Charlotte as she hosted WorkshopStemette, Eleanor Watts delivering a session on Public Health. Eleanor is currently doing her Masters in Public Health and led the participants through an interactive lecture on the subject. This session was super relevant and Eleanor answered questions on the importance of public health education during the current pandemic.

For this week’s Friday Live session, Head Stemette Anne-Marie was joined by two aviation role models from Virgin Atlantic. Bernice Moran, pilot and Sophie Kelly, engineer. Bernice is one of Virgin Atlantic’s senior first officers with over 20 years of piloting experience and millions of air miles behind her. Bernice joined Virgin Atlantic in 2007 as a 747-400 pilot but now flies the Boeing 787 Dreamliner. Sophie is an engineer and has a B2 license which means she works mainly on avionics and electronics. This covers everything from inflight entertainment, engine management systems and all those instruments on the flight deck. 135 participants tuned into our Livestream and asked the role models loads of interesting questions, as well as learning about their routes into their STEM roles. Here are some quotes from some of the viewers about what they enjoyed the most.

We received some great overall feedback from week 8 too!

  • 209 participants tuned in this week!
  • 100% would like to attend another Stemettes event
  • 93% shared that their knowledge of STEM improved
  • 88% shared that their confidence in STEM improved
  • 86% shared that their network within STEM improved
  • 86% shared their awareness of STEM improved
