RECAP: Week 5 of STEM Mode In

Week 5 was Roma Agrawal week!

This Monday 47 attendees tuned in to follow along with our Stemillions Activity Pack (aka Meal Plan) based on Roma Agrawal, a structural engineer, author and diversity campaigner, championing women in engineering. Core Stemette Jazmin helped the attendees make paper columns. The task was testing which shaped column was the strongest, triangle, square or circle. We had a lot of fun finding out the answer! Roma also gave the girls an insight into her career journey and what it was like being a structural engineer for the Shard.

When we asked the attendees what they enjoyed most about the session they said:

“I enjoyed testing the columns and seeing which ones worked. I especially enjoyed that it was also linked to art so that we could solve issues in a fun, creative way”

“I met Roma Agrawal as I had read her book and also because I had never met a structural engineer before.”

On Wednesday, Head Stemette Anne-Marie hosted an introduction to Agile. Anne-Marie was joined by Stemettes Carin Tonkmor and Jess Levett, who are both graduates of the first cohort of Stemettes Certification Academy. 41 attendees were introduced to Agile practices including how to apply Agile tools to time management and networking.

Here are some quotes from the girls who joined the session about what they enjoyed the most:

“I enjoyed learning more about Agile framework and its applications in industry.”

“Refreshing my mind on Agile.”

“Seeing new people and knowing what they do”

For the Friday Live session, we were joined by our Stem Mode In role model this week, Roma Agrawal. Core Stemette Jazmin hosted a 60-minute Q&A with Roma for 168 viewers. Some fantastic questions were asked by the audience and Roma shared her journey from education right through to motherhood. We learned that her favourite building on the London skyline (apart from the Shard) is the London Eye due to the interesting construction behind it. Here are some quotes from some of the viewers about what they enjoyed the most.

“The questions and random facts Roma added to give answers more depth. She’s aware of what extra information will be useful for those interested in her field and also for those who don’t know much about her field. Very good session.”

“Learning about the various aspects to engineering”

We received some great overall feedback from week 5 too!

  • 256 participants tuned in this week
  • 100% said their knowledge of STEM improved
  • 95% shared their perception of STEM improved
  • 95% shared their awareness of STEM improved

That’s all for Week 5. Next week’s role model is Katherine Johnson – we can’t wait to see you all for those events.
