STEM In A Day @ Global

On April 6th, Stemettes partnered with Global to bring STEM in a day to their London offices; giving young women in the area the opportunity to network, hear from industry experts how they made it AND code a website! 19 young women joined us for a day of networking, mentoring and STEM. Watch what happened in our roundup video here.

We kicked the day off with an incredible tour around Global’s offices – we even got to sneak into a couple of studios! To show everything Global has to offer, the young women listened to an inspiring talk about all the work Global does in tech and its charitable wing.

Next up, we had a panel of incredible Globalists:

  • Anna Gawne – Scrum Master
  • Mary Desmond – Technology Graduate
  • Vanessa Tarrier – Broadcast Engineer
  • Sabina Bunger – Network Operations Manager

After introducing themselves, the panellists then answered lots of questions from our audience. Questions about their favourite school subjects, advice for work experience & GCSE options and also questions about their jobs. We then headed straight into speed networking and then a SCRUMPTIOUS lunch of sandwiches, fruit and profiteroles!

After lunch, the coding fun began! Global’s charity, Make Some Noise, helps with so many amazing projects around the country – including the Amber Trust which helps make music more accessible for the visually impaired. We set the young women the task of creating a website to make learning an institution easier for the visually impaired and they blew our socks off!!

We spoke to Emily Booth (Project Analyst) and Anna Gawne (Scrum Master) about the event:

“Global had such a fun and enjoyable day hosting Stemettes and the girls. We are pleased with how engaged the girls were and hope we’ve inspired them by educating them on different career paths within technology. We were impressed with the training Stemettes provided and the websites the girls produced. We would recommend any women looking to go into STEM subjects to go to a Stemettes event! We look forward to hosting another.”

In terms of impact…

  • Attendees rated the day 9 out of 10 Overall
  • 68.5% had increased STEM confidence
  • 82.5% had an increased positive perception of STEM careers
  • 76.4% had increased STEM awareness
  • 80% had an increased knowledge of STEM careers

When asked what her favourite part of the day was, one attendee responded ‘I loved it all! The tour of Global, the food, the people and the hackathon/ website designing.’ Another young woman said that she ‘loved getting a tour around global studios.’

We spoke to Natali about her experience attending this event:

“We had an amazing day at Global who generously opened up their studios for us to visit. The tour was exciting and we were able to go into the Capital Studio which we loved. We took part in a hackathon where we were given a crash course in HTML code the brief was to make a website ‘To help people with Visual Impairment to learn to play an instrument’ which we then presented to a panel of women with prizes at the end. I went in not knowing what I wanted my future career to be. But during our networking session and after talking to some of the women on the panel the day inspired me to possibly become a broadcast engineer, I am so glad that I signed up for this event.”
