Stemettes partnered with Roche on 3rd February 2022 to offer a Student to Stemette (STS) mentorship programme. Young women and non-binary people were matched with mentors to increase their confidence and employability skills within STEM fields.
The programme matched 20 mentees with 20 mentors to meet fortnightly for one-to-one sessions over four months of the programme. Mentors and mentees celebrated the end of the programme with a graduation ceremony and then provided feedback on their experience in the programme.
What did mentees think?
Mentees set goals at the start of their mentorship. By the end, 85% of their goals were achieved. Skills they worked on included networking, interview skills, time management, and CV writing.
The mentorship also aimed to work on expanding mentee’s networks and building self-confidence. All of the mentees on the programme said they wanted to maintain a relationship with their mentor and 92% felt their self-confidence had increased.
Mentees rated their improvement across Stemettes’ impact metrics:
- 92% felt their network in STEM fields increased
- 92% felt their confidence in their STEM abilities increased
- 92% felt their knowledge of STEM increased
- 100% felt their awareness of STEM career options increased
What did mentors think?
Mentors rated the programme 7.7 out of 10 and 92% would recommend the STS programme.
Mentors felt that being part of the programme improved their mental well-being, mentoring skills, and network and inspired them.
“As much as I hope I have inspired and helped my mentee she has certainly left me full of inspiration and faith in the younger generation” – STS Mentor
Thank you to Roche for partnering with Stemettes on this programme and to all the mentors for volunteering their time. Congratulations to the mentees on completing the programme.
