‘Believe you can and you’re halfway there’ – ever heard that expression? There’s a lot of truth to it but believing in yourself is not always easy. Ever feel like everyone else has all the answers and you don’t? Or that you’ll look stupid if you do or say the wrong thing? Me too! Here are a couple of tips that have helped me when I’ve had a confidence wobble:
1. Don’t Be Afraid To Fail.
Making mistakes (or even falling flat on your face!) is the first step to learning and getting better – if you don’t try, you’ll never know. Trying new things is a skill in its own right, and the best thing you can do is start practising that skill…today! Put yourself in situations that take you out of your comfort zone and you’ll be amazed by what you can accomplish.
2. Know Your Advocates.
If you’re struggling to believe in yourself, find the people that already believe in you and understand your talents and strengths. Maybe it’s a teacher, a friend, a family member – connect with that person before a new challenge so they can remind you of the things you do brilliantly. Believe them when they tell you. 3. Fake It Till You Make It.
Everyone, no matter how confident they seem, has times when they doubt themselves. Hold your head up high, make eye contact, say things like you’re sure of them – people will see a confident person. Start small – confidence is like a tree – it takes time to grow. Make yourself a promise that the next time you want to speak up, take the lead or take a chance – you’ll do it. The first time might be scary but the next time will be easier – before you know it, your tree will be a forest. Remember, if you don’t back yourself – who will? Believing in yourself if the first step.
