Why Life as a Mathematician Is Great

Mathematics

Have you ever considered a career as a mathematician? If not, is it because you think being a mathematician is boring, and involves sitting at a computer all day? This is not the case at all, and Lily suggests the types of jobs you can get when you are a mathematician, including:
– Data science, medical research, finance and investments, engineering and teaching.

She also gives a range of fields you can work in, including:
– Space and aircraft, government, meteorology, education, or entrepreneurs.
The possibilities are endless.

It is important that you gather the skills that you need for a job, but Stemettes know it is not always possible to know beforehand and you will end up picking up the skills you need as you work in your new job. These are the skills Lily has picked up in her career as a mathematician:

  1. Transferable skills.
  2. The ability to form analytical arguments.
  3. Problem-solving skills.
  4. The ability to manipulate data.
  5. Communication skills.

To begin with Lily’s top tips she tells us to talk to as many different people as you can about their careers. This could be your neighbours, your friends, your parent’s friends, and your relatives. Ask them what they do day to day in their job, what their favourite part of their job is, as well as what experience they have needed to get into their job. This will allow you to get the best idea of what you want to do!

Next, ask yourself what. What problems do I want to solve? What am I good at? What do I enjoy doing? After this, you can use the answers to these questions to find your perfect career.

Next, look for all the opportunities you can. This can include looking at university courses and programmes, research projects, internships, and apprenticeships.

Last but not least, always challenge the status quo. Go for those jobs that are male-dominated. Do the things people tell you it wouldn’t be possible for you to do!
