International Women’s Day @ LGIM

Meet The Stemettes @ LGIM: IWD Edition

On the 7th of March, we partnered with Legal & General to celebrate International Women’s Day 2020. We hosted 55 girls at their London office. We facilitated a panel, a Q&A session and an interactive networking session.

We hosted 7 panellists, all with various STEM career journeys to share. Our panellists were: Oge Udensi, Laura Haddleton, Christine Meredith, Nicola Morgan-Brownsell, Miriam Breen and our mystery man Kaurab Akhter. We were very excited to host Laura as she is the supply chain manager at Candy Kittens! Candy Kittens kindly donate gourmet vegan sweets to all of our events.

We explored themes of apprenticeships, A-level choices, university degrees, work experience and alternative routes into STEM careers.

We received great feedback from the ‘LGIM: IWD Edtion’ event and the girls rated the event overall an 8.4/10!

  • 97% of attendees would like to take part in another Stemettes event
  • 100% of attendees stated an improvement in awareness of STEM careers
  • 84% of attendees stated they are interested in coding in the future

 

The girls shared what they enjoyed the most:

“Everything. As we had a great host and people on the panel who gave great information and new information that I did not know”

“Learning about the different jobs of the panellists, inspired me to get more into coding and make more of an effort to communicate”

“The question and answer section was SO helpful. I learned a lot and have gained more confidence in my plans in STEM, I enjoyed this part the most.”

“The vegan food and asking questions as they were really useful. I also found talking to each other about each theme useful in terms of realising how few female role models I know.”

During the speed networking session, the girls had the opportunity to discuss the questions that had been asked to the panellists in groups with LGIM volunteers. Attendees were also asked to complete a worksheet to win a prize.

At this event, 4 winners won a snazzy Bluetooth Speaker! A huge thank you to LGIM and our amazing volunteers for celebrating International Women’s Day with us this year. To keep up-to-date on our upcoming events, head to Online Events!
