Stemettes IWD Hack 2022 @ MI5, MI6 & GCHQ

On 12th and 13th March 2022, Stemettes partnered with MI5, MI6 and GCHQ to deliver a virtual hackathon for International Women’s Day. The aim was to utilise technology to #BreakTheBias, in line with the 2022 IWD theme.

The event was open to women and non-binary people aged 12 to 21. The 42 attendees split into smaller groups to work on their product or business idea. At the end of the second day, they presented their work to judges from MI5, MI6 and GCHQ. Throughout the weekend they also had the opportunity to meet role models and network with them.

What did attendees think?

Attendees rated the hackathon 9.25 out of 10, with 100% saying they would like to attend another Stemettes event.

They were asked to rate their progress across our impact metrics. After the hackathon, they saw the following improvements:

  • 91% of attendees felt their knowledge of STEM improved
  • 91% of attendees felt their confidence in their STEM abilities improved
  • 94% of attendees felt their awareness of STEM career options improved

What were their favourite parts?

Attendees enjoyed working in a team on the group project and being able to meet and interact with new people. Hearing from MI5, MI6 and GCHQ representatives was an interesting opportunity to learn about the variation in roles and skills used in them.

Unexpected benefits of the programme included: increasing confidence, improving teamworking skills, and learning about finance and budgeting.

“The use of role models was really helpful and i received a lot of helpful advice. As well as this, I learnt a lot more and debunked a lot of misconceptions about MI5, MI6 and GCHQ. Finally, communicating with everybody else in my team and watching other presentations allowed me to strengthen my knowledge in lots of areas that I didn’t know much about beforehand.” – Hackathon Attendee
